Full course description

Welcome to BRIMM 112: Transition to Positive Legacy

The old view of mine closure is that there should be a return to the natural state before mining commenced. While this may be possible in some cases, the new view is that the goal should be positive legacies. These legacies may involve using assets and land differently for the benefit of stakeholders. Examples include energy and water infrastructure and using land for forestry, recreation and biodiversity. A feature of this course is to explore the different ways that mines and mine assets can be repurposed. While there are a growing number of success cases, these positive legacies usually happen because of careful planning and stakeholder engagement processes. Consequently, the course will also examine best practices for transitioning to a positive legacy.
