Kierkegaard's Legacy in 20th Century Thought

About the Course

During the 20th Century, Kierkegaard’s influence expanded from the local confines of Denmark to the wider scene of European culture, having a decisive influence on several of the major philosophers of the 20th Century, including Ludwig Wittgenstein, Martin Heidegger, and Albert Camus, three towering figures of English, German, and French philosophy. Among Kierkegaard’s most impactful ideas were “the unsayable”, “nothingness”, and “the absurd”. In this course we will study Kierkegaard's impact on these seminal philosophers as it relates to these and similar ideas. 

Format

Once a week, you will participate in a real-time online class delivered by your instructor using video conferencing. Watch your instructor’s lecture and ask questions in interactive Q&As. All lectures are recorded and shared with students for later viewing.

About the Instructor

Dr Anders Kraal joined the Department of Philosophy at UBC in 2015. He has published papers in various areas of philosophy, including the history and philosophy of logic, the philosophy of religion, and the history of early modern philosophy. He has a particular interest in the Problem of Evil, and the philosophical writings of David Hume, Soren Kierkegaard, and Bertrand Russell.
