Full course description

The Trial of Socrates

About the Course

The trial of Socrates is one of the most impactful events in the history of Western Philosophy. After a lifetime of dedicated philosophizing Socrates paid the ultimate price, being sentenced to execution by a 280-221 vote by a 501 person jury representing democratic Athens. But there are many unsolved puzzles surrounding this event, and in modern scholarship a debate has flared up about whether Socrates was sentenced primarily on account of challenging the political or the religious establishment of his day. At stake in this debate is the proper understanding of Socrates’ role in the unfolding of Western philosophy. In this course we explore these and related themes.
